Water Harvesting and Tree Protection and Tree Planting are Solutions -Climate Change
Kenya is experiencing drought and it is worser in some parts than others.I remember late last year it used to rain cats and dogs.Fast forward to the beginning of the year there is a drought.Where does all that rainwater go? The reason why we are experiencing drought now is because of human activities.People are cutting trees to put up buildings. Urbanization is great but we should keep the trees too.Years back Lavington Area in Nairobi had so many trees.Flash forward to now trees aren't as many as they used to be.Lavingtion Area is now just full of apartment complexes. Mau forest which is the largest water catchment area in Kenya has been reduced due to logging and human invasion.
Communities that aren't supposed to be at the forest area have inhabited the forest. They cut down trees for logging and to get land for cultivation. When all this is happening i ask where is the Kenyan government and what is the government doing to stop and educate the public on harmful human activities? Where are the people responsible for the environment and forests. The Government is responsible for protecting forests and relocating communities that are inhibiting forests. The Government is responsible for building enough dams to provide its citizens with water even during dry seasons. We pay high taxes left right and centre.Seems like we get taxed to maintain people's lavish lifestyles. The government should come up with water harvesting projects and drought resistant tree planting projects in arid and semi-arid areas. When it rains it usually floods up alittle and one wonders where all that water goes to.It is annoying that water just goes to waste. Why can't that water be harvested. And that is the government's responsibility.
What is water harvesting? Water harvesting is the collection of runoff rain water for productive purposes. Instead of runoff rain water being left to cause erosion, it is harvested and utilized. In the semi-arid drought-prone areas where this is practised, water harvesting is a directly productive form of soil and water conservation. In general, water harvesting is the activity of direct collection of rainwater. The rainwater collected can be stored for direct use or can be recharged into the groundwater. Rain is the first form of water that we know in the hydrological cycle, hence is a primary source of water for us.But in Kenya it is left to go to waste.I have heard of just one water harvesting project in Kenya. It is run by an individual so shame on the Kenyan government.
Water Rationing We are experiencing water rationing. It can get worse from time to time and from area to area.I bet the big people in government do not have water rationing."It is always the case of who is to blame?Who is behind this?Who is in the shadows? Who lights the flame of this raging inferno and watches from high window?"You do not play your part and never pay for the consequences. No accountability is always the order of our government.
Solution: -Tree planting projects should be more and education of the public on the importance of trees. -Trees are important for water catchment so the government should protect trees and forests. -Water harvesting projects should be taken up by the Kenyan government. -More dams and bore holes should be built to ensure that all Kenyans have access to water even during the dry season
